Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) registered under societies registration Act-1860, commenced actual functioning from July 1986. MEDA’s mandate is to undertake the development of renewable energy and facilitate energy conservation in the state of Maharashtra, as a State Nodal Agency.
The
Broader Objective is to promote, develop and diffuse knowledge in the various
fields of Renewable Energy Source and assist the Government of Maharashtra and
the Govt. of India in the efforts to develop and promote Renewable and
alternate energy sources/technologies, evolve and promote energy conservation
measures.
The Govt. of Maharashtra in line with the policy of Central Govt. has adopted the policy of achieving the target of renewable energy up to 10% of conventional energy in the state and accordingly declared policies from time to time. Among various non-conventional energy sources, Wind Energy is one of the important resources that has been widely tapped in the state. Besides this, Biomass, Bagasse, Small, hydro, Urban & Industrial Waste & Solar Energy are other main resources of renewable energy.
The potential for saving steam and power consumptions at sugar factories in the State of Maharashtra is quite high, considering existing steam & power consumptions respectively of 38 to 50% on cane & 20-25 kWh/TCH for steam driven Mills & fibrizer drives (against energy-efficient sugar factories having these figures respectively at less than 30% steam on cane & less than 16 kWh/ TCH)
Sugar factories are energy intensive industries and they will soon come under the category of designated consumers under the upcoming PAT cycle. This will mandate the sugar factories to undertake mandatory energy audits & achieve the targets to be set by BEE, through the baseline studies.
Although, The office of the commissioner of sugar has laid guidelines for sugar factories to conduct energy audits through empaneled energy auditors and MEDA has an ongoing ‘Save Energy Program’, there is a need to provide handholding support for the State sugar factories to implement energy efficiency & renewable energy projects, through defined supportive financial assistance and required technical assistance during implementation & monitoring of these projects.
It
is also essential for the sugar factories to optimize their energy mix by
implementing other renewable energy projects like biogas to power/ CNG, rooftop
& ground mounted solar power plants at the available space at their
premises. This will also help the State sugar factories to increase their
revenues and overcome the current financial stress.
In order to
comprehensively sensitize the sugar factories in the State of Maharashtra on
the above opportunities, the State nodal agency, Maharashtra Energy Development
Agency (MEDA) has organized this one day business meet, in association with
MITCON Consultancy & Engineering Services Ltd.
All the stakeholders, including senior management personnel from the sugar factories, office of the sugar commissioner, policymakers at the Centre & the State Governments, Sakhar Sangh, VSI, equipment & technology providers, experts & experienced professionals, financial institutions/banks, consultants & advisors, etc. are expected to participate in this business meet.
Benefits of Business Meet:
- Insight about Policy and
Regulatory Framework in India & Maharashtra - Financing of Energy
Efficient / Renewable Energy Equipment - Present Technologies in
EE/RE sectors - Case Studies Associated
with the Sugar Factories
The expected outcomes from this business meet include the evolution of supportive policy & regulatory framework, required financial models & technical support and a certain way ahead for the sugar factories in the State, to improve their energy efficiency and optimize their energy mix for improved revenues, in the coming period.
