India can emerge as a global leader in solar energy, with its installed capacity increasing exponentially over the past decade.

India’s Solar Energy Journey

As of December 2024, India’s solar energy installed capacity reached 94.17 GW, and an impressive growth of 30.2% from 72.31 GW in 2023. The sector’s growing rapidly due to government initiatives, technological innovations, and public-private partnerships. As a result, India is now the third-largest solar producer worldwide. Rooftop solar systems—on homes, offices, and industries—have become popular, adding over 11 GW of clean energy. This indicates changing customer preferences, a shift towards decentralized and sustainable energy options.

Future Targets

India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Solar power is expected to play a key role in achieving this target. The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is headquartered in India, highlighting the nation’s global leadership in solar advocacy. India has introduced encouraging schemes like PLI for Solar PV Modules (for manufacturing of high efficiency solar PV modules) and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (subsidies for rooftop solar). With support for research and innovation, India aims to reduce its dependence on imports and create jobs locally in the solar sector.

Challenges to Overcome

Though we are making progress step-by-step, Indian Solar Market is also facing few challenges. finding land for solar farms, high upfront costs, and dependency on imported solar modules hinder the progress. On top of that, improving our solar power grids and developing better battery storage solutions are essential.  Clearer solar policies and incentives to encourage more companies to invest in clean energy can be beneficial.

How Private Sector and Business can help

Private companies play a big role in making India a solar energy leader. By collaborating with technology providers and financing institutions, private entities can accelerate the adoption of solar energy. By installing solar panels, supporting off-grid systems, or funding large-scale solar projects, businesses can speed up the transition to renewable energy. Green energy agreements are also good options to source clean power for industrial operations, showing that sustainability makes good business sense.
